Ray Oldenburg gave us a great starting point for defining Third Places, but times have changed, and we need to change with them. How can we redefine Third Places and share this knowledge with the world?

During our interviews, Johnson County Librarians emerged as immensely knowledgeable on Third Places and their impact, as well as key drivers of innovation around Third Place development. This makes them ideal collaborators for creating a modernized definition of Third Places.

What if?

  • We worked with Johnson County Librarians to utilize existing research and input from stakeholder interviews to create a new definition for Third Places.

  • We used library social media channels to disseminate this definition and spark conversations around Third Places in Johnson County.
