We know that profit-driven corporate interest is a barrier to both existing and future Third Places in Johnson County. But how do we shift this balance of power?

We believe that one way to achieve this is to create incentives for small businesses and nonprofits in the county to distribute needed resources and emphasize that they are a priority.

There are already plenty of development incentives in Johnson County, but they focus on proving future financial value rather than demonstrating a commitment to serving the community and upholding the core values of Third Places.

However, during our research we discovered that the Enterprise Center in Johnson County is already distributing COVID relief grants to small businesses in the county and has built relationships and reputation with this group of stakeholders.

What if?

  • We collaborated with the Johnson County Enterprise Center to create a ‘microgrant’ incentive specific to small businesses and nonprofits that value accessibility, equity, social connection, and invitations to linger.

  • Use the existing rapport with that the Enterprise Center has with small businesses and nonprofits to rebuild trust between county leadership and these valuable stakeholders.

  • Implement a small tax on large corporations within the county to provide funding for the program.

Just as important as improving public transportation and supporting small businesses and nonprofits is raising awareness of what Third Places have to offer. Click here to read our recommendation for how we can get the word out.
